Design and eco-friendly initiatives at Valley Lodge & Spa in the Magaliesberg

Valley Lodge & Spa in Magaliesburg is maintaining and developing eco-friendly solutions to reduce its carbon footprint in tourism.

In keeping with its eco-friendly initiatives, Valley Lodge recently launched what has been described by visitors as "the most heavenly spa and treatments." Annelie Mathesen of Fourthwall Interiors, designer of this sublimely elegant spa, says: "The natural environment was not only the inspiration for the spa interior. Valley Lodge has implemented 'green' measures to reduce the impact of the spa on the environment. Heat pumps were utilised instead of geysers resulting in a reduction of 25% in power consumption. The use of a hot water under-floor heating system has also resulted in a 75% reduction of electrical consumption compared to a conventional electrical heating system."

The hotel, in conjunction with the Dept of Water Affairs (DWA), has a team of local workers clearing all invasive plants along the Magalies River, which flows through the private hotel property.

A local contractor is appointed, trained, guided and equipped by DWA to manage the project of clearing the river banks of all invasive plant types.

Says Mike Simpson, Managing Director of Valley Lodge & Spa: "This is the third time the DWA has returned in the past four years to cut down invasive trees to clear the river bank, thereby facilitating indigenous growth and re-establishing what makes this region such a sought after destination in eco-tourism."
