Historical and birders' paradise
The Madikwe Game Reserve comprises 720 square km, where a summer two day bird watching safari could result in between 190 and 210 bird species out of the known 313 species recorded here to date. Special bird species include: Kori bustard, White Stork, Coublebanded Courser, Burchell's Courser, Pied Babbler and plenty more.
The region is also of great cultural and historical interest, with the old school building where Herman Charles Bosman taught in the reserve and the outline of Abjaterskop looming just beyond the western boundary of this Groot (great) Marico bushveld.
Facts about Tau
Tau has been celebrated since 1995 as a destination with sublime Big Five, but also a vast variety of birds in addition to the smaller game species, guided by highly trained game rangers.
Add delicious cuisine and the Tau Spa Oasis and you'll understand why even Rovos Rail makes a bush-break stop at Tau! Several chalets have been enlarged and beautifully refurbished, together with the dining and lounge areas. All rooms overlook parts of the waterhole.
Tau accommodates up to 60 guests in the 30 air-conditioned chalets and larger groups are often accommodated at various surrounding lodges situated in a 15-minute radius. The conference facility is ideal for small groups as well as delegates of up to 150.
Tau is recognised for its contribution to developing eco-friendly safaris whilst also being involved in community development as well as the education and wellbeing of its people. Guests seem particularly keen on the tree-planting programme in place, which is a further commitment to conservation for future generations. The endangered African wild dog numbers have remained constant in the region, whilst the lodge team supports the successful tag and track systems implemented in the reserve to save and conserve the rhino population.
May the spirit of Madikwe rest in your heart!.

North West Parks rhino project benefits eco-friendly Tau
Saving the rhino
Five rhino in the North West have been fitted with GPS devices and alarms, so far, in the first such project in the world, whereby the animals' movements are tracked 24/7, which is great news for the staff and management of Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe Reserve situated in the North West, where eco-tourism has been a priority for many years.
More than 200 rhino have been slaughtered countrywide since the start of 2010 and in the North West Province alone, more than 40, including pregnant cows, have been killed. However, authorities hope the use of GPS technology will turn the tide as syndicates are becoming more sophisticated, comprising the basic poacher, the controller who organizes the poaching gangs, the purchaser, the shipping coordinator and the international buyers, said Rusty Hustler of the North West Tourism Board.
Tau has maintained and improved its 5-star facilities over the years to ensure local as well as international visitors return time and again. Not only did the lodge launch its eco-friendly Tau Spa Oasis two years ago, but the lodge has also maintained as well as improved its eco-tourism operations.
Says a recent guest: “The game rangers are passionate about the flora and fauna in this diverse region and my husband and I could enjoy our time here at leisure, knowing the kids were taken care of at the Tau Cubz Club, where the rangers' methods of educating children on ec0-tourism proved most stimulating during our 5-star safari. Our couples' spa treatments certainly ensured we were suitably de-stressed from city life, complete with natural aromatherapy products to complement the lodge's eco-friendly philosophy!”

Eco-Safari Travel News
Tau cares for its community
TAU GAME LODGE in Madikwe was built in 1995 and to complement its success over the years playing host to South African and international visitors, the lodge takes its responsibility to the local community as well as eco-tourism seriously.
Whilst everyone involved in sustainable responsibility projects and eco-safari destinations knows that such undertakings take time and resources, Tau's commitments include:
* sponsoring university education of learners who are promising students;
* supporting local schools and community industry;
* looking into an environmental alternative as an energy source for the future;
* educating the community to be self-sufficient by example, such as growing organic vegetable crops to sustain their families;
* Tau rangers have contributed to conservation by planting indigenous trees and guests are informed of the trees' origins, ecology, African folklore and any medical purposes;
* one of the eco-safari projects at Tau includes a tree conservation fund, involving guests' planting trees and getting their name plaque on camera and displayed ;
* supporting and stimulating the performing arts by employing local community choir and dance group to perform at the lodge for groups and special occasions;
* the endangered African wild dog, which this reserve is world-famous for, are often seen at a kill, where puppies are flourishing in their natural habitat - wild dog pack numbers remain steady;
* The Tau Spa Oasis utilises natural aromatherapy massage oils to add to the eco-conscious tourism Tau has become known for, such as the eco-friendly Africology range of products, incorporating the healing powers of Aloe Vera; the traditional food plant of Africa, Marula; the immune system regulator, African Potato; and the myriad skin soothing properties of Rooibos;
The spa has successfully embarked on a community driven project by training women from nearby Supingstad as therapists. The three successful therapists received intensive training in specific spa treatments and are now qualified and employed at Tau Spa Oasis, where they continue to receive support and training. Through regular assessment of all staff members, spa therapists complement the highest standards set for treatments at this spa. Tau therefore offers much needed skills training as well as income to members of this rural community.
Situated in South Africa's fourth largest game reserve, Madikwe Private Game Reserve, which is recognised for its wealth of history, Tau Game Lodge is an ideal 5-star romantic, corporate and family safari destination, where the state-of-the-art conference facilities and The Tau Cubz Club children's programme are further enhancing features of this welcoming lodge
The hills of the Tshwene-Tshwene and the dramatic ridge of the Dwarsberg Mountains expose rocks of up to 2,630 million years old and artefacts of the Stone and Iron Ages are still found in the Great Marico dust, where many Oom Schalk Burger stories have been related by the now dearly departed Patrick Mynhardt.
Tau, meaning the place of the lion, offers wide-angle views of the main watering hole in front of the lodge and the privately situated guest chalets are electrically fenced to ensure guests' safety from predators.
The 30 air-conditioned chalets embrace the spirit of Africa with modern luxury, timeless tranquillity and unsurpassed vistas of the bush and wildlife.
Tau accommodates up to 60 guests in the 30 chalets and larger groups are often accommodated at various surrounding lodges situated in a 15-minute radius. The conference facility is ideal for small groups as well as delegates of up to 150, offering the most sophisticated equipment and amenities available, yet complementing the Big Five environment.
